چکیده

We report the detection by Chandra of SMM J02399−0134 and SMM J02399−0136, two distant (z = 1.06 and z = 2.81, respectively) submillimeter sources gravitationally magnified by the galaxy cluster Abell 370. These are high-significance (> 7σ) X-ray detections of the high-redshift submillimeter source population. The X-ray positions are coincident with the optical positions to within one arcsecond. The X-ray spectra, while of low signal-to-noise ratio, are quite hard. Absorbed power law models with fixed photon indices of Γ = 2.0 imply local absorbing columns > 2×10 cm and unabsorbed luminosities > 10 erg s in both sources. These results imply that nuclear activity is responsible for the bulk of the luminosity in SMM J02399−0134, and for at least 20% of the luminosity of SMM J02399−0136, consistent with previous optical observations. We also place an upper limit on the X-ray flux of a third submillimeter source, SMM J02400−0134. Considered together with previously published Chandra upper limits on X-ray flux from submillimeter sources, our results imply that 20 −16 % of submillimeter sources exhibit X-ray emission from AGN (90% confidence), consistent with expectations of their contribution to the diffuse X-ray background. Broad Iron Emission from Gravitationally Lensed Quasars Observed by Chandra

Recent work has demonstrated the potential of gravitationally lensed quasars to extend measurements of black hole spin out to high redshift with the current generation of X-ray observatories. Here we present an analysis of a large sample of 27 lensed quasars in the redshift range z 1.0 4.5 ≲ ≲ observed with Chandra, utilizing over 1.6 Ms of total observing time, focusing on the rest-frame iron ...

We present results from a search to detect radio emission at 1.4 GHz from gravitationally lensed arcs towards galaxy clusters. Using the FIRST survey observations of galaxy cluster fields, we have clearly detected 1.4 GHz emission at the location of bright arc towards the galaxy cluster Abell 370. The possibility that this emission is associated with a projected galaxy superimposed on the arc c...

A CO Survey of Gravitationally Lensed Quasars with the IRAM Interferometer

We present the results of a CO survey of gravitationally lensed quasars, conducted with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer over the last three years. Among the 18 objects surveyed, one was detected in CO line emission, while six were detected in the continuum at 3mm and three in the continuum at 1mm. The low CO detection rate may at least in part be due to uncertainties in the redshifts derived...

Chandra Observations of the Gravitationally Lensed System 2016 + 112

An observation of the gravitationally lensed system 2016+112 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory has resolved a mystery regarding the proposed presence of a dark matter object in the lens plane of this system. The Chandra ACIS observation has clearly detected the lensed images of 2016+112 with positions in good agreement with those reported in the optical and also detects 13 additional X-ray sou...

A combined X - ray and gravitational lensing study of the massive cooling - flow cluster PKS 0745 - 191

We present spatially-resolved X-ray spectroscopy of the X-ray luminous cluster of galaxies, PKS0745-191, using observations made with the ASCA and ROSAT satellites. The X-ray data measure the density, temperature, and metallicity profiles of the cluster gas and constrain the distribution of mass in the cluster to a radius of 1:5 Mpc. We report the discovery of a bright gravitationally-lensed ar...
